Job Description

To work as part of the childcare team assisting the room leader to provide a high quality service for children and families attending the service.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Preparation and setting up of the playroom
  • Providing a stimulating play environment
  • Maintaining appropriate hygiene standards and tidying of playroom
  • To ensure that all equipment is safe for use
  • To work with room leader and other childcare workers to provide warm and consistent care and supervision to children in a group setting including meal and sleep times
  • To ensure the safety, health and well being of children at all times
  • To assist in the implementation of developing appropriate childcare programs for each child in your care
  • To create an environment for children and parents which encourages self-confidence, independence and self-esteem
  • To encourage and enable the child in their development
  • To assist in keeping daily records, including a register, daily diary and progress reports and any other reports deemed necessary on each child in their care
  • To advise the room leader on a daily basis on any issue or concerns impacting on the effective operation and delivery of a quality service within the centre
  • To refer all parent concerns to the Manager & Childcare Coordinator
  • To liaise with the primary carers of the children and ensure they are made welcome in the centre at all times
  • To report any concerns to the designated Child Protection Officers (Manager & Childcare Coordinator) in line with the Tusla & Children’s First guidelines
  • To ensure confidentiality at all times
  • To adhere to all the policies and procedures in Tallaght Childcare Centre in relation to care, behaviour management, staff and good childcare practice
  • To participate in staff/team meetings and other meetings when necessary
  • To participate in continued professional development as required by the Manager.
  • To carry out any other related duties as may be assigned by the Manager/Childcare Coordinator


The successful candidate must have



  • Full FETAC Level 5/6 or higher in childcare
  • Relevant First Aid Certification



  • Minimum 2 years relevant childcare experience in similar position
  • Knowledge and/or experience of the needs of children




  • Good working knowledge, understanding and sensitivity to the needs of children and parents
  • Ability to plan, led by children’s needs, and link to Siolta and Aistear
  • A good knowledge of relevant early years legislation and policy in particular Pre School Regulations 2006, Siolta and Aistear
  • Experience of working with a variety of age groups and levels of development.
  • Commitment and knowledge to treat all children as individuals and their families with equal concern
  • Good communication skills
  • Good observation and listening skills
  • Ability to work on own imitative
  • Adaptable and flexible in working with other adults
  • Dependable and reliable
  • Good sense of humour
  • Good communication and listening skills both verbal and written



35 hr week opening hours 8.00am - 6.00pm (shifts)


Depending on experience and qualification (salary scales in operation)
